Bill & Toni’s – A Legendary Foodie Favourite Thriving Onward

There are many and varied “iconic” eateries dotted throughout Sydney; much-loved establishments that have an avid clientele of regular patrons. And whilst Sydney arguably has a reputation as something of a superficial and somewhat fickle city, it is these bedrock dining destinations that are the true connectors of Sydney culture.

One such venue just a quick trip from Potts Point is the celebrated Bill & Toni’s, an unassuming yet undoubtedly legendary dining landmark in the equally famed Stanley St epicurean enclave. An East Sydney icon that stands at the literal and figurative heart of this unique Sydney setting, Bill & Toni’s has been a firm Sydney favourite since 1965.

Started by one Guglielmo (Bill) Chiappini as the San Ciro Coffee Lounge, he added an upstairs restaurant with the assistance of mates Toni de Santis and Adolfo Fasciani in the early ‘70s. Obviously gents who liked to keep things clear and simple, they named the combined establishment “Bill & Toni’s”, and the rest is a version of history.

In the subsequent years the business has changed hands on several occasions but the focus has always been the same – simple, hearty meals underpinned by a rich Italian heritage and which you didn’t have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy. Cheap and cheerful but in the best possible way.

Now owned by Claudio Tropea and Eva Santilli, the current incarnation of the business has kept that through-line with an undoubted old-school charm, with long-term patrons able to attest that the homespun décor and unpretentious service have remained the same over the years. And it is that egalitarian sensibility that makes the place so special.

On any given day or night, you’re likely to find city barristers mixing with surf-club ski paddlers, high-profile actors dining alongside local plumbers, tactical response police officers rubbing shoulders with clientele of a perhaps less-reputable nature. All enjoying the classics like the famous schnitzel combo or a huge bowl of spag bol, served quickly and without fuss.

On a recent warm autumnal weekday evening, it was no surprise to see a couple of first-grade NRL players in attendance alongside a noted boxing promoter, uniformed members of the NSW police force, local families, a prominent TV host, and the odd familiar face whom you can’t quite place but just know that are “someone.”

The centrepiece of an overall buzzing Stanley St scene, with new streetside seating arrangements creating a vibrant al fresco sensibility, Bill & Toni’s has stood the test of time. And perhaps that serves a good example of what truly connects with Sydneysiders – solid, dependable, and resolutely no-frills. The best of Sydney, thriving onward.
