Ken’s Continental Cafe, Rushcutters Bay
Ken’s Continental Cafe on the corner of Bayswater Road and Ward Avenue, Rushcutters Bay, is a niche cafe that is now a local institution.
It was founded in 2017 and has flourished ever since despite being kept a local secret in a secluded location with its al fresco seating.
Its menu has now expanded since Michael has taken over and includes coffee specialties from Columbia, Brazil and Ethiopia. These specialty black coffees are rotated daily using a cold press technique freshly made on site. Ken’s also stocks Padre brand roasted beans from a specialty roast master from Melbourne.
The most popular dish on the extensive menu is the continental deli plate, a grazing plate which consists of cheese de jour, home-made sausage, olives, home-made chutney, boiled egg and pickled vegetables.
Other delicacies include yellow pea pancakes, a Jamón (Spanish ham) and mozzarella baguette and pear salad.
In such a sophisticated and dense urban area, it’s unsurprising this cafe is so popular.
Michael, the owner insists customer service is paramount. Customers are well-service by Beau, Ivan, Diego and Scully.
And with such constantly helpful staff the close working relationship between locals and staff is personal. It’s the place where staff only need to ask, “the usual this morning?” to kick-start the early morning brain cells.
