Pomeroy Apartments

The Pomeroy apartments, 14 Macleay Street, Potts Point, are believed to possibly be named after a 19th century country estate near the tiny locality of the same name about 180km northwest of Sydney. Its population today is only 115.

The original owners probably named their city dwelling after their country estate, a common occurrence of the period, although at that time the locality of Pomeroy even had its own primary school.

Pomeroy apartments are not named after Pommery, a different spelling, which is a famous French Champagne house in the centre of Rheims about 150 km northwest of Paris.

The current original Pomeroy site was sold and the Commodore Hotel chain created the Chateau Commodore, a seven-storey executive hotel on the site. It comprised 92 double rooms, two suites, a restaurant, cocktail bar, concierge and swimming pool. A two-level basement provided parking for 40 cars. Its semi-circular entrance drive with gardens was a local landmark.

It was then purchased by the Mirvac group in August 1988 and then developed by the Winten Group. The current 11-storey building was designed by Corben Architects with its Tuscan columns, sandstone facade, marble entrance foyer, swimming pool and gym. The ground floor incorporates a bookstore. The Pomeroy has won various awards including the and National UDIA Medium Density Awards and the NSW MBA  Award for construction excellence.

Its name is carved into its sandstone entrance plinth creating a more recent local landmark.
