THINGS GO BETTER WITH CHEESE: PENNY’S CHEESE SHOP

7 Apr 2022

“I love cheese” says Penny, cheese writer and cheese expert.

And she is surrounded with cheese whose attributes she loves to share. Her knowledge is exhaustive. She spreads her expertise in her new shop on Macleay Street opposite the famous Kings Cross fountain.

Penny’s Cheese Shop is take-away only and has been open six weeks in this location.

But it’s not just a cheese shop stocking over 70 types of cheese: it’s also a one-stop snack shop.

It is bursting with other delights: sugar plums, fragrant Italian glacé clementines, organic eggs, imported Modena balsamic vinegar, artisan relishes, ginger penny biscuits by Crooked Creek, cherry jam, crème fraiche, Beloka water, Roquefort cheese, Mont Priscilla cheese from Adelaide, named after a location close to its family farm, Mont Priscilla. It is  an Alpine cheese distinguishable by the line of ash running through its centre. The orange-brown rind is washed to produce a full aroma, silky and subtle taste. It has a soft, yellow-ivory paste that is buttery, sweet, and smooth with an aroma of fresh hay.

She also stocks cacciatore salami, chicken terrine with truffle and leek and local PIOIK  bread from Pyrmont.

The daily fresh cheese toasties are a constant favourite with customers.

The most popular cheese is the dohnut-shaped La Luna goat’s milk cheese.

“The reaction from customers has been overwhelmingly positive” says Penny, “and I enjoy sharing my 18-years love affair with cheese. So far our “love affair” has been completely satisfactory with no arguments or breakups!” she says jokingly.
